Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument

On August 24, 2016, President Obama designated 87,536 acres of land in the North Maine Woods as a national monument, establishing the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and securing this pristine natural landscape for future generations. Monument lands border Baxter State Park and offer spectacular views of Mount Katahdin.

Katahdin Woods and Waters invites discovery of its rivers, streams, geology, and wildlife. The night skies in this region are known for spectacular views of Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. While the designation of this area is new, the vast beauty and serenity is not. We hope people take advantage of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and enjoy nature at its finest.
