Hike along 215 miles of trails, camp at one of 337 campsites, and explore 209,644 acres of wilderness! Baxter State Park is one of Maine's premier attractions. Percival P. Baxter was governor of Maine during the years of 1921-1924 and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and vacationing in the Maine woods. Baxter State Park was created through Governor Baxter's love of the wilderness, and interest in the creation of a park for the people of the State of Maine. His acquisition and donation of thousands of acres of land helped to make this dream a reality. With over 40 peaks and ridges, not including Katahdin, the park also has a trail system of over 215 miles popular with hikers, mountain climbers, and naturalists. The park is a premier year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with roughly 60,000 people visiting the park in the summer months.
