Built in 1839, Saddleback Ledge is a granite lighthouse standing at the southern entrance to Penobscot Bay, also known as Isle au Haut Bay. There is no light between Matinicus Light and Bakers Island Light, which spans a distance of nearly 40 miles, and after a fiery shipwreck on the ledge in 1836, Congress saw the necessity for a lighthouse and appropriated $5,000 for the construction of Saddleback Ledge Light. The lighthouse is not open to the public, and is best seen by boat. (Image courtesy of Dominic Trapani Photography)
