Fort William Henry
- Old Fort Road
- New Harbor, ME 04554
Located near Pemaquid Harbor, Fort William Henry stands in a large rectangular area, defined by low stone walls and a tall singular stone tower. The fort was built in 1692 and occupied a strategic location at the northeastern edge of English influence. The fort was extraordinary for its time, with Massachusetts Governor Sir William Phips spending nearly 2/3 of the colony’s budget to construct it. The fort was destroyed four years later in the Siege of Pemaquid. It was reconstructed in 1908 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
