Fort George
- Battle Avenue
- Castine, ME 04421
Located in Castine, ME, Fort George was the focus of a years-long dispute among the English, French, Indians, and colonialists. The fort was built in 1779 by Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War as part of an initiative by the English to establish a colony called New Ireland. The fort was the principal site of British defense during the Massachusetts-organized Penobscot Expedition - a failed attempt to retake Castine. The fort was abandoned and demolished in 1819, and the state of Maine acquired the land and the remains of the fort in 1940. (Photographs courtesy of Instagram users @sean.oco and @dlizotte82)
