Holiday Events

December is a magical time in Maine. There is nothing like an old-fashioned New England holiday steeped in history and tradition. From holiday parades, sparkling lights and Christmas decor, festive window displays, to caroling, Maine never ceases to amaze.

After the lobstering season is finished, Maine decides to put them to use on our Christmas tree. Lobster trap trees can be seen in many areas of the state and we invite you to try to see as many as possible throughout your holiday visit.

Voted the #2 Christmas town in the U.S. by HGTV, the Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude fills the seaside town with so much holiday cheer that you will feel like you are in the North Pole. From Christmas tree lighting, candlelight carolers, concerts, amazing food, this event is sure to please the whole family. Don’t forget to catch Santa’s arrival by lobster boat!

Each year, FreeportUSA presents the Sparkle Celebration which kicks off the first weekend in December. You can enjoy a Parade of Lights down Main Street to wake up the famous Talking Christmas Tree and the fun continues all weekend with loads of free events and activities including visits with Santa, horse drawn carriage rides, a Holiday Movie Marathon, festive rides aboard the Amtrak Downeaster, a Tuba Christmas Concert and more! Best of all – it’s all free!

On top of these great events throughout the state, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is the Lighting of the Nubble. The town of York lights up the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, also known as Nubble Light, through New Year’s Day. Enjoy hot cocoa, cookies, and a visit from Santa Claus!

Whether you are home for the holidays, or enjoying a getaway, Maine invites you to join in on the holiday festivities.
