Stockholm, Maine is a Tri-Cultural community. It was first settled by Swedish families who cleared the land and established farms on what later became South Main Street and Route #161. Records show five families came the first year, and the 1890 census reported sixty-six residents.
Stockholm Historical Society & Museum was formed in 1974. It acquired the building that John & Lewis Anderson built in 1902 as the first business in town. Over 6,200 square feet of exhibits show the history of the town.
Stockholm’s history is unique for a Maine community. In less than 75 years this area had gone from forest to farm to a booming industrial town to nearly a ghost town. Presently, new homes are being constructed and old ones renovated, as former residents, as well as newcomers, are finding that Stockholm, with a quiet atmosphere and friendly spirit, is a desirable place to live.
