Here at Fiber College we truly believe that the urge to work with fiber is woven into our DNA! Our early ancestors used their nimble fingers and creative minds to transform the fibers of the world around them into the tools, clothing and food they needed for survival. Ropes, fishing lines, knots, nets, spindles, needles and looms are some of the earliest human technologies…and also sources of pride, pleasure and decorative invention that speak to far more than simple necessity. When we experience the warmth of wool, marvel at the delicacy of silk, the strength of linen, the colors of plants and all the wonderful shapes and patterns at our fingertips, we connect not only with the natural world but also with our deepest humanity.
Every September since 2003 Fiber College has been bringing together artists and makers to share our passion for fiber arts and enjoy the beautiful landscape of mid-coast Maine at Searsport Shores Ocean Campground. Our annual festival of events and classes has grown into a major event on the Maine arts calendar. But the world is changing and so are we. We’re excited that since we first began making fiber arts more accessible, the internet, YouTube, and an explosion of interest in heritage crafts has made it so much easier to learn the basic fiber skills. There is also a growing awareness of our impact on the environment, and the need for sustainability. The Slow Food Movement has begun to influence fashion and many other aspects of material culture. And, most dramatically, the pandemic has made us reassess our priorities and think hard about what gives our lives purpose and meaning, and brings us joy. In response to all these changes we have shifted away from a wide menu of short, introductory classes to focus on building something deeper and more necessary: a program of immersive, four day workshops designed to take your skills to the next level, unlock your creativity and give you the gift of the time and opportunity to make something extraordinary.
