The organ is an instrument especially well-suited for the performance of transcriptions, an art which reached its apex in the early 20th century when solo-organ performances of symphonic orchestral works became de rigueur. Bach embraced this practice in his own way: at least five of the six Schübler Chorales are transcriptions of movements from his own Cantatas. He also arranged instrumental works of Vivaldi and Johann Ernst for solo organ performance. Even so, the question remains: with so much music written specifically for the organ, why perform a transcription?
