For hikers, nature lovers, fishermen, canoeists, whitewater rafters, hunters and snowmobilers, the Maine Highlands is a place for superlatives.
It features some of the best parks and wilderness preserves in the state, its highest mountain (Katahdin), largest lake (Moosehead), longest river (Penobscot) and some of the best hunting and fishing in the east. An outdoor adventure paradise in all four seasons, the Maine Highlands is also one of New England’s most reasonably priced regions for family fun.
Bangor, gateway to Maine’s North Woods, is the region’s largest city. Once the “Lumber Capital of the World,” Bangor is a city with authentic cultural traditions honoring its logging past and its Penobscot tribal heritage. Other great spots from which to venture into the Maine Highlands region are Greenville on Moosehead Lake and Millinocket, a hub for visitors to Baxter State Park and Mt. Katahdin.
