Aroostook County
Aroostook County, the proud Crown of Maine, is the state’s largest and northernmost county.
Within its 6,800 square miles are welcoming, multicultural communities as well as vast stretches of unspoiled wilderness, more than 2,000 lakes, streams and ponds, the famous Allagash Wilderness Waterway and the mighty St. John River.
Known as “The County,” Aroostook is home to a diverse mix of cultures: French Acadians who settled the St. John Valley, Swedish immigrants who founded the villages of New Sweden and Stockholm, the Micmac tribe in Presque Isle, and the Maliseet Band in Houlton. Monuments and museums, as well as powwows, festivals and fairs celebrate the traditions and rich heritage of this region.
